By the early 1970s, gold prices were climbing fast and Rolex wanted a way to reassure buyers that what looked like gold on the dial really was gold. Their answer was the sigma dial — small Greek σ characters flanking the "T Swiss T" at six o'clock, quietly certifying that the hour markers were solid gold rather than gold-plated brass. It's the sort of detail only collectors look for, and exactly the sort of thing that makes a Datejust from this window worth chasing.

This Reference 1601 sits squarely in that moment. Introduced in 1959 and produced into the late 1970s, the 1601 is the canonical Datejust of its era — 36mm, fluted 18K white gold bezel against a stainless steel Oyster case, on a Jubilee bracelet that has carried it through more than five decades and still wears with confidence.

Beneath the surface beats the Rolex Caliber 1570 — the movement that defined Rolex's mid-century engineering. Twenty-six jewels, 19,800 beats per hour, a smooth automatic winding rotor, no hacking, no quickset date. It's the rhythm of a different generation, and after sixty years of running it still does exactly what it was built to do.
