In the late 1980s and into the 1990s, IBM gifted Rolex Datejusts to employees marking significant service milestones — typically 25 years with the company. The casebacks were engraved with the recipient’s name alongside the IBM logo that has become a recognizable hallmark of the program. These watches sit at a fascinating intersection of corporate Americana and horology: a moment when one of the most powerful companies in the world chose a Rolex Datejust as the appropriate token of a career’s worth of work.

The Ref. 16220 is the perfect watch for that era. Introduced in 1988 and produced into the early 2000s, it carries an engine-turned bezel — a machined, knurled alternative to the polished smooth or fluted gold bezel — that gives the watch a tactile, almost mechanical quality. There’s something fitting about that finish on a watch from 1991: the same year IBM was shipping the PS/2 and the early ThinkPad was a year from launch. It’s a Datejust that brings you back to the golden ange of personal computing.

At 36mm, with a beautifully aged silver tropical dial on a full stainless steel Oyster case and bracelet, this example is a shining example of a classic from Rolex.

Beneath the surface beats the Rolex Caliber 3135, widely considered one of the finest automatic movements Rolex has ever produced. Introduced in 1988, it became the workhorse that powered the Datejust for decades — reliable, precise, and built for daily wear.
